Potable water system functions are water receiving, storage and supplying of potable (drinking) water to vessel consumers.

Drinking water must be fresh, clear, without smell, non-harmful in chemical content and does not contain pathogens. The properties of potable water regulates by World Health Organization (WHO) and National sanitary regulations.

In majority cases, this system covers the water supplied to the drinking fountains sited around the ship, to the accommodation and the galley. The water in this system passes through a mineralising filter which restores essential salts to the water but may be bypassed if necessary.
