Most valves in cooling systems are manually operated. Overboard water suction valves from Kingston boxes can be hydraulically operated with the help of a hydraulic control system. These valves are controlled by a function selector switch located in the main control room (ECR) of the engine room in the main console. The valve actuator switch on the console has three positions: OFF, OPEN and CLOSE). When the valve reaches the extreme position (fully open or closed) when switching, the switch must be turned to the OFF position. Illuminated indicator shows when the overboard water suction valve is open (green) or closed (red). In addition, each overboard water intake valve in this system has an emergency hand pump. The remote emergency hand pump has a control position controller with OPENING, CLOSING, LOCKED positions. If the valve is to be opened, the position lever is turned to the OPEN position and the hand pump runs until resistance to suction is felt. If possible, after emergency switching of the valves, their position shall be confirmed visually or by observing the illuminated position indicator on the ECR console. When the valve is fully open or closed, the positioner is turned to the LOCKED position to prevent the valve from moving.
Thermostatic valves used in the HT and LT circuits of the fresh water cooling system that automatically maintain the set water temperatures in the cooling circuits.
Cooling system pumps shall be started and stopped locally from the local control panel or remotely from the engine room central control room (ECR) of the appropriate group start panel located on the main switchboard. Or from the appropriate monitoring and control window of the computer monitoring system (if such a system is installed on board). Pressure sensors on the discharge side of the pumps switch on the backup pump when the water pressure in the system falls below the specified value and signal it with an audible and light alarm.

NOTE: Inscriptions may be used on the control panels to indicate the operation of the equipment in standby mode at the names of switches, button selections or tell-tales (Standby, ST-BY, Auto Change).

In an overboard water system, the anode / cathode set of the filter used is selected and activated on the MGPS control panel.
