The preparation and operation procedures for bunkering should be followed as the preparation and operation procedures. Precautions to be observed when handling lubricating oils, are the same as for loading HFO and diesel oil.

Preparation of Lubricating Oil

Lubricating oil bunkering stations filling connections on both the port and starboard sides of the vessel. At each such station there are three lubricating oil filling connections. The lubricating oil for lubricating the main engine cylinder oil can be directed to one of the two cylindrical CO Storage Tank No.1, No.2 and to the auxiliary engine oil settling Tanks (see figure below).

Cylinder oil No. 2 storage with oil

It is important to follow these procedures before starting work:

a.         Check that there is sufficient capacity in the tank to accommodate the quantity of oil to be received.
b.         It is important to agree with the supplier the amount and specification of the oil to be supplied.
c.         Remove the blank flange on to the required filling line.
d.         Connect the loading hose and open the manifold and tank valves (see figure).
e.         Ensure that oil is being received in the selected tank.
f.          When the required quantity of oil has been received, signal for the pumping to stop.
g.         Allow the pipe to drain and then close all valves.
h.         Remove the supply pipe and refit the blank flange.
i.           Check and record the levels in all lubricating oil tanks and record the amount of oil received.
j.           Enter the details of the oil transfer in the ‘Oil Record Book’.
NOTE: Absolute cleanliness is essential when loading lubricating oil and it is important that no contaminants are allowed to enter the filling system.

Transportation and storage system of Lubrication oil

Lubricating oil transport and separation system

All oil settling tank drain valves are of the quick shut-off type and remotely controlled from the fire control station. Once actuated and closed, these valves must be reopened manually on site.
Lubricating oil from settling tanks can be supplied by gravity to associated equipment. Such as from the main engine sump to the crankshaft, crankpin, and crosshead bearings.
The oil settling tank is used to transfer and settle the oil in the main crankcase before returning it to the crankshaft. Or, by recirculating the oil through the centrifugal separator system, returning it to the crankpin after further cleaning. Steam heating coils are installed in the oil settling tank to facilitate the separation of solids in the oil.
LO the supply pump can pump lubricating oil from:
✔    Main engine (ME) sump;
✔    Main engine lubricating oil storage tank;
✔    Lubricating oil settling tank;
✔    Auxiliary engine sumps;
✔    Auxiliary engine lubricating oil overflow tank;

The LO transport pump can pump lubricating oil to:
✔    Lubricating oil (separator) sludge tank;
✔    Lubricating oil settling tank;
✔    Main engine lubricating oil storage tank (through deck filling connection);
✔    Auxiliary engine lubricating oil storage tank (through deck filling connection);
✔    Main engine deck filling connections (port and starboard);
✔    Auxiliary engine deck filling connections (port and starboard);
