CAUTION: Before using the separator, a re-check must be carried out, to ensure that the necessary valves for opening the separator, the heater and the separator supply pump are opened, as well as the tank system: the tank from which the HFO will be taken and the tank to which the cleaned HFO will be supplied. It is also necessary to make sure that the water and air control systems are ready.

Check that steam is supplied to the separator heaters or that the steam condensate drain valve is open (it must always be open). The steam supply valve is controlled by a control system, and the main separator control system regulates the steam supply so that the temperature of the HFO leaving the heater is 92 - 98oC.

Both of HFO separators operate on the same principle using the same type of controllers, so the operating procedures are the same. Thus, during the preparation of the fuel separation system, it is assumed that no. 1 FO separator and no. 1 FO separator supply pump shall be used to purify the fuel from the HFO settling tank and to replenish the HFO daily service tank.

Working procedure to be carried out:

a)    Make sure there is enough HFO in the HFO settling tank for the separator to work properly.
b)   Check and record fuel levels in all fuel tanks.
c)    Open the self-closing drain valve of the HFO settling tank and close it again when all the water has drained.
d)   All separator valves must be closed first. Open all separator control air and control water valves. Make sure that power is supplied to the separator controller.
e)    Set the valves as shown in the figure below.

NOTE: Steam fuel valves, air supply valves and water supply valves for the fuel supplied to the separator must be used according to the needs of the separator.
Separator clean fuel drain control valve must be set to the standard pressure and should not be adjusted under normal operating conditions.

f)    Make sure the separator brake is disengaged and the bowl rotates freely.
g)   Check the oil level in the separator reduction gearbox.
h)   Start the No. 1 FO Separator Fuel Supply Pump. A three-way valve will ensure that the fuel bypasses the separator and is returned to the settling tank.
i)     Before continuing, run the separator and make sure that the bowl has reached the required speed.
j)     Switch on the control block.
k)   Using the FO button on the control panel, make sure that the working water opens and closes the separator bowl.
l)     Slowly open the steam supply to the No.1 Heater.
m) Check that the automatic controller has taken over control of the system and that it maintains the required fuel temperature.
n)   When the HFO temperature exceeds the minimum set temperature, the separation program must be started by pressing the soft key on the control panel Process START. And the start-up sequence will begin, including sludge discharge and discharge tests. Upon successful completion of the test, the separator will continue to operate in automatic mode. When the separator is operating and no signs of abnormal vibration are observed, all temperatures and pressures must be recorded, and the fuel level of the tanks used checked.
