Fuel oil storage and transfer system
Fuel oil and transportation system
Procedure for transferring the HFO from
the storage tank to the settling tank using an HFO transfer pump:
Under normal circumstances, the HFO transfer pump is provided with an automatic operating and control mode. In this way, the HFO settling tank is refueled automatically. The pump is switched on and off by float switches in the fuel settling tank. Pump and fuel piping valves are set as follows, so that the pump can operate automatically as shown in the figure. The ship's duty engineer shall ensure that there is sufficient HFO in the tank used HFO. If the HFO is insufficient in the settling tank, duty engineers must fill it up by transferring the HFO from the in use storage tank.
Procedure for the Transfer of Heavy Fuel
Oil Between the Storage Tanks:
If necessary HFO may be transferred between storage tanks. This procedure is like the procedure for transferring HFO from the storage tank to the settling tank.
Failure of a Transfer Pump
If a DO or HFO transfer pump fails, another can be used in place of the failed pump. To achieve this, the suction and discharge crossover blanks must be opened, and the crossover valves opened.
A damaged pump must be isolated from the fuel system by closing the inlet and discharge valves. When the fuel system valves are additionally checked, pumping transferring can be started with a running fuel transfer pump to avoid cross-contamination of fuel. In any case, fuel pumping transferring must be done manually. When the repair of a faulty pump is completed, the system can be returned to normal.
NOTE: It is necessary to take care, to prevent HFO from entering the MDO system. The temporary discharge of DO into the HFO system is better than the entering of the HFO into the MDO system.
