Ship systems and machinery require constant
control, whether they work or not, for economical, continuous, efficient, safe,
secure and environmentally operation. Shift Engineer should investigate the
reason if has any doubts about the system or machine performance, or if
observes an abnormality on the operating values. A well-designed ERS with the
right algorithms is a very useful tool for training on this subject.
Comperative analysis of Diesel engine cylinders pressures is given as an
example with figure below to illustrate the importance of this issue. Main
propulsion power Diesel engine performance is important for a ship. OOW wants
to get information about machine performance, like given in table below, by measuring
the pressure of each cylinder with the stand-alone system given in figure below.
Although there are many types of this instrument, they all measure the same
parameters.
