OOW draws a sailor’s eye line, as shown on figures below, to match the slope of the temperature rise and extends it until the line passes the maximum level at t3. The time difference between t3 and t2 is the maximum time for the shift engineer to solve the problem. Otherwise, automatic control system will slow down the diesel engine immediately. Of course, this is not a good situation for the Navigation engineer in charge of navigation watchkeeping at the bridge in ensuring safe navigation.
