Steering gear is part of the main class annual survey. For steering gear arrangement this includes:
Visual inspection of all accessible parts of the steering gear arrange-ment including associated equipment
Operational test of main and auxiliary steering gear (Note that the op-erational instructions shall be permanently displayed both on the bridge and steering gear compartment!)
Test of alarms, local control and all modes of remote control
Testing of communication systems between bridge and steering gear spaces
If significant repairs have been carried out to steering gear (for example during dry docking) attending class surveyor may require a sea trial to ensure satisfactory operation. //DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.7 Ch.1
