Additional rules for starting air for class notations Periodically unattended machinery space – E0 can be found in DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.6 Ch.2 Sec.2

M/S MERSol has two starting air compressors and two 30 bar starting air receivers with sufficient capacity to 6 + 6 starts for main engines and 3 starts for each of the auxiliary engines. The starting air compressors have separate electrical power supplies, with compressor no.1 being supplied from the main switchboard and compressor no.2 through emergency switchboard. There are built-on oil and water separators. The starting air compressors are fully automatic and controlled by receivers’ air pressures. As required by the rules for automatic installations, there is automatic drainage and pressure relief for unloading at start.
As per rules there are non-return valves between compressors and air receivers. The compressors are air-cooled and fitted with safety valves, pressure gauges at every compression stage, and both pressure and temperature switches. The air receivers have own safety valves and low-level alarms at 16 bars. There are non-return screw-down valves, filters and separators installed at the lowest point of starting airline as close as possible to each of the engines. (Hatlapa, 2011)
