List of required emergency power consumers in cargo ships is specified in DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.4 Ch.8 Sec.2.3.1.2 Table 2. Modified requirements for non-SOLAS vessels are available in DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.4 Ch.8 Sec.2.3.1.3. Class notations Passenger ship, Ferry and SPS give additional requirements for transitional power sources. //DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.4 Ch.8 Sec.2.3

M/S MERSol has emergency generator room located on deck 4 aft ship, accessible from open deck. The emergency generator room contains an emergency diesel engine, an emergency switchboard, two UPS battery cabinets for lighting, an emergency lighting transformer, two additional transitional power sources, a deck lighting board and an exhaust fan for emergency generator room. There is an air intake directly from open deck.
Emergency switchboard has supply for following consumers: davit for rescue boat, fire pump no.2, starting air compressor unit, motor control center MCC0211, controllers for STB steering gear motors, UPS and transformer for emergency lighting, emergency lighting boards, VMC (ventilation control center) cabinet 0211, emergency diesel start battery charger, fire alarm center, navigation distribution switchboard and emergency control cabinet for sliding WT-doors. I.e. it’s fulfilling re-quirements for cargo ships.

The emergency diesel engine is equipped with electric starter and hydraulic emergency starter. In remote mode starting device is set for three automatic start attempts as required. The emergency diesel engine has alarms for low lube oil pressure, high lube oil temperature, high cooling water temperature, leak in fuel oil pipes, low cooling water level and control voltage failure. Over-speed is giving shut down, which is not allowed by DNV rules. Anyhow, the regulations for required control and monitoring devices varies between classification societies.

The emergency generator onboard M/S MERSol is not meant to be used as a harbor generator. For example, the filters on fuel and lubricating oil should be doubled and the engine equipped with more ex-tended alarm and monitoring system for that purpose. (Lindenberg-Anlagen GMBH, 2011)
