The fire-fighting training of the ship's officers and ratings shall comply with the provisions of Regulation (EC) No 1978/95 requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.
All seafarers on dry cargo and fishing vessels shall, before being assigned to the ship, complete introductory and shore-based fire training on shore-based training according to an approved training program confirmed by the Ministry of Transport and update their knowledge at least every 5 years.
Prior to taking up duties on oil, chemical or gas tanker cargo and cargo handling equipment, shipboard personnel and ratings shall complete shore-based fire safety training in accordance with the extended program and non-cargo crew members shall have an introductory seafarer training course. The courses on shore are held at an educational institution for which curricula are approved by the Ministry of Transport and update their knowledge at least every 5 years.
General requirements:

  • It is not permitted to change the amount of fire inventory without coordination with the ship classification society.
  • Fire-fighting equipment and devices may only be used for direct purposes. The means used must be supplemented or replaced when the ship enters the first port.
  • When allocating fire-fighting equipment in stations, it must be ensured that:
    • inventory is properly secured in fixed locations and is easily and quickly removed in the event of a fire;
    • access to inventory is free.
  • In the engine room and other rooms that can be manned or personnel may be present, the starters of fixed volumetric fire extinguishing systems must be blocked with a "GAS - EXIT" signal and light.
  • Volume extinguishing systems must be equipped with an air purge device. The station must have a purge start-up scheme and procedures for controlling its performance.
