A fire on board is one of the most serious hazards that can occur on board. Fire prevention and fire measures are extremely important onboard ships. The organization, enforcement and operation of fire safety according to the requirements are very important factors in preventing not only significant material losses, but also human deaths. The structure and layout of the ship's premises, zones and all systems are complex. Today, ships use highly sensitive fire detection systems. Timely detection of a fire source can prevent significant losses.
Firefighting on board may not be successful if:

  • this will not be prepared in advance by training the ship's crew and drills;
  • there will be no on-board fire protection equipment that is adapted to extinguish the flammable materials on board.
Both organizational and technical measures shall constitute ship-fire systems with the objectives of:
  • Preventing fire or explosion;
  • Reducing the risk to human life posed by fire;
  • Reducing fire damage to the ship, cargo transported and the environment;
  • Controlling and extinguishing a fire or explosion while maintaining a fire focus in the area where the fire occurred;
  • Providing adequate and easily accessible means of escape for passengers and ship's crew.
