In the engine room, it is also possible to use the on-board water cooling system for drainage in the event of an emergency flood. The suction line of the pumps in this system is equipped with a valve for the direct intake of water from the engine room. This is a SOLOS requirement.
Flooding of the engine room can occur due to damage to the housing structure. Which can occur by running aground, mooring, or colliding. However, a defect in the seawater pipeline system is more likely to be the cause of the flooding.
