Consumers are devices designed to convert electricity into another form of energy. Consumers ensure the safe navigation and operation of the propulsion and power plant, the safety of cargo and the normal living conditions of the crew.

Ship consumers are classified by purpose, degree of importance and mode of operation.

By purpose, consumers are divided:

- navigation equipment and communication– Gyro compass, Radars, GMDSS, Magnetic compass, Autopilot, ARPA, AIS, Speed log, Echo Sounder ect;

- equipment of ship systems and devices - pumps, fans, compressors;

- deck machinery equipment - crane and winch, steering gear, windlass, capstan, mooring winch.

- hotel equipment – Air conditioning system, galley, laundry.

- lighting equipment.

Main consumers divided into essential and non-essential services.

Due to generator overload the power management system disconnects non-essential services in a defined order at set time intervals, eg:

- 1st trip – air conditioning, ventilation, galley, laundry – 5 seconds;

- 2nd trip – refrigeration cargo (container vessel), cargo handling – 10 seconds;

- 3rd trip – deck equipment – 15 seconds.
