The command-and-control process, applied to manage the machines and systems connected to the automation system, is called "automation". The need for automatic control is entirely related to the economical, continuous, efficient, safe, secure and environmentally friendly operation of ship machinery and systems. The program menu cluster, operating algorithm, command and control elements and signals form the basis of automation process. Monitoring, analyzing, defining the data, produced by the automation system, and taking the necessary precautions according to the results obtained, are the most important factors that define automatic control phenomen. It is very important for the Marine Engineers to understand clearly operational logic lying under automation process in order to manage the machines and systems in good manner connected to the automation system
