A

AVR

an automatic voltage regulator is an electronic device that maintains a constant voltage level to electrical equipment on the same load. The AVR regulates voltage variations to deliver constant, reliable power supply.

B

Battery

consist of two electrical terminals called the cathode and the anode, separated by a chemical material called an electrolyte. To accept and release energy, a battery is coupled to an external circuit.

Blackout

condition is a scenario on a ship, wherein the main propulsion plant and associate machineries such as boiler, purifier and other auxiliaries stop operating due to failure of power generation system of the ship.

C

Circuit breaker

is an electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overcurrent/overload or short circuit. Its basic function is to interrupt current flow after protective relays detect a fault.

Cosφ

the ratio between Active Power and Apparent Power in volts-amperes is called power factor PF.

Current

is the rate at which electrons flow past a point in a complete electrical circuit. At its most basic, current = flow. An ampere, or amp, is the international unit used for measuring current.

D

Diode

is a semiconductor device that essentially acts as a one-way switch for current. It allows current to flow easily in one direction, but severely restricts current from flowing in the opposite direction.

E

Electrical circuit

is a continuous and closed path of an electric current. An electric circuit consists of electric devices, a source of electricity and wires that are connected with the help of a switch.

Electricity

is the flow of electrical power or charge. It is a secondary energy source which means that we get it from the conversion of other sources of energy, like coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear power and other natural sources, which are called primary sources.

Excitation

current in a generator - in the case of a machine with field coils, a current must flow in the coils to generate the field, otherwise no power is transferred to or from the rotor. The process of generating a magnetic field by means of an electric current is called excitation.
