All ships are subjects for periodical surveys to establish reasonable assurance that the ship, its hull structure, machinery, equipment and systems remain in satisfactory condition and in compliance with approval and accepted standards. Annual surveys are carried out yearly with due date generally corresponding to class assignment anniversary date. The survey time window is +/- 3 months from the due date.

Ships complying with requirements provided in Pt.6 (Additional class requirements) may be assigned corresponding class notations. Some of the additional class notations are mandatory, for example ships using LNG as fuel have to have Gas fueled LNG class notation, while E0 notation for unattended machinery space is voluntarily, but still required for operating with unattended machinery space.

Intermediate survey is normally carried out in connection with second or third annual survey. The due date is normally 2.5 years after expiry date of previous class certificate and the survey window is +/- 9 months from the due date.
